The Japanese bridge

Monet built this humpback bridge himself, inspired by the Japanese prints in his collection.

A floating bridge

The bridge spans the whole canvas and is cut off at both edges, so it seems to float above the water.

The water lilies

Dusky pink and cornflower-blue lilies break through the greens, in various stages of bloom.

The reflection

The bridge's reflection forms a dark arc at the bottom of the picture.

A shifting view

It is as though we are looking up at the bridge, but down on the water lilies floating into the distance.

Just the accompaniment

Monet said the water flowers were far from the whole scene; really, they were just the accompaniment.

The story

A garden made for painting

In 1893, Monet bought land next to his house in Giverny and created a water garden "both for the pleasure of the eye and for the purpose of having subjects to paint". He enlarged the pond and filled it with exotic water lilies. In 1895 he built this bridge at the neck of the pond, and began painting it that same year.

Seventeen kinds of light

By 1899 the garden had matured. Monet painted 17 views of this motif under different light. The London painting is one of them.

Towards abstraction

The water garden became the obsession of his later career, the subject of some 250 paintings. His later ponds grew almost abstract, but this 1899 version still feels anchored in visible reality.
