床 Bed

Van Gogh said this painting was about rest. Looking at it should calm the mind.

两把椅子 Two chairs

两把椅子、两个枕头……有人认为，这些成对的物品表达了他在等高更来同住的期待。

Two chairs, two pillows. Some see this as Van Gogh waiting for Gauguin to join him.

墙 Walls

你看到的蓝墙，原本是紫色的。画里的红色颜料慢慢褪色，紫色就变成了蓝色。

These blue walls were once violet. The red pigment faded over time.

墙上的肖像 Portraits

床上方挂着两位朋友的画像：画家欧仁·博赫，和军官米利耶。

Above the bed hang portraits of two friends: painter Eugène Boch and officer Milliet.

地板 Floor

仔细看，画里几乎没有阴影。梵高故意用平涂的颜色，像日本浮世绘那样。

There are almost no shadows. Van Gogh used flat colour, like Japanese prints.

窗户 Window

梵高在给弟弟提奥的信里，把房间的颜色一一写了下来，其中窗户是绿色的。他说，在这幅画里，颜色要承担一切。

In a letter to his brother Theo, Van Gogh listed the room's colours, including a green window. Here, he said, colour was to do everything.

房间角落 Corner

房间看起来有点歪？不是画错了，梵高的卧室本来就是不规则的梯形。

Does the room look crooked? It really was an irregular shape.

故事 · The story

ACT I 第一幕 · 期待 Anticipation

1888年秋，梵高住进阿尔勒的黄房子，梦想在这里建立画家们共同生活的"南方画室"。他画下自己的卧室，等待高更到来。

In autumn 1888, Van Gogh moved into the Yellow House in Arles, dreaming of a "Studio of the South" where artists would live together. He painted his bedroom while waiting for Gauguin.

ACT II 第二幕 · 破碎 Shattered

高更来了，但两个月后，两人激烈争吵。梵高精神崩溃住进医院，高更离开了阿尔勒。这幅画后来也在他住院期间受潮损坏。

Gauguin came, but two months later they quarrelled violently. Van Gogh broke down and was hospitalised, and Gauguin left Arles. The painting was later damaged by damp while he was in hospital.

ACT III 第三幕 · 回望 Looking back

1889年，梵高自愿住进圣雷米的疗养院，在那里重画了这间卧室两次，较小的一幅送给母亲和妹妹。那时，他已经不住在这里了。

In 1889, Van Gogh entered an asylum in Saint-Rémy, where he painted the bedroom twice more, the smaller one for his mother and sister. By then, he no longer lived there.

关于画家 · About the artist

文森特·梵高（1853–1890），荷兰画家。他将近27岁才开始画画，短短十年留下了大量作品。1888年他来到法国南部的阿尔勒，在那里画出了许多最著名的画。

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) was a Dutch painter. He began painting at around 27 and left a huge body of work in just ten years. In 1888 he moved to Arles in the south of France, where he painted many of his best-known works.
