The mirror

The convex mirror on the back wall reflects the whole room, and two men coming in at the door. One of them raises his arm.

The signature

Above the mirror, in Latin: "Jan van Eyck was here. 1434." Like graffiti, it announces that the painter himself was present.

Amber prayer beads

A string of orange-yellow amber prayer beads hangs on the wall. Van Eyck even painted their reflections on the wall.

The oranges

Oranges lie by the window, expensive items in Bruges at the time.

The chandelier

A brass chandelier hangs from the ceiling. Look closely, though: there isn't really enough space in the room for it.

床 The bed

There is a large bed in the room. At the time, beds were a normal feature of reception rooms, showing off the owner's wealth.

Scenes around the mirror

The mirror's frame is set with small scenes of Christ's Passion.

The story

A room in Bruges

In 1434, Van Eyck painted this couple. The man is believed to be the wealthy Italian merchant Giovanni Arnolfini, in the reception room of his house in Bruges, possibly with his second wife. What the double portrait is meant to show is still debated.

A "real" room

The room looks so real, it is as if Van Eyck had simply removed a wall. Yet there are inconsistencies: not enough space for the chandelier, and no fireplace. He built a convincing room, not necessarily a record of a real one.

In London

The painting spent much of its history in Spain. In 1842, the National Gallery bought it with a government grant: its first Northern Renaissance painting. Today it hangs in Room 52.
